Objectives & Functions

The onus of providing therapeutic, prophylactic and farm advisory services for the livestock sector rests solely with the Department of Animal Husbandry in the state of Uttarakhand and the Department provides these through its following Services to farmers –

• Therapeutic Services – Treatment of sick animals for infectious, contagious & metabolic diseases.
• Prophylactic Services – Vaccination of animals against commonly occurring bacterial & viral diseases e.g. Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD), Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS), Black Quarter (BQ), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), etc.
• Livestock Breeding Services – Door delivery of AI services for cows and buffaloes at farmers’ doorstep, establishing natural breeding centres in remote and inaccessible mountainous regions not connected by road for bringing the breedable population under the organized breeding program by provision of quality breeding bulls.
• Livestock Insurance.
• Mass Drenching/Dipping of sheep and goats to control endo/ecto-parasitic infestation.
• Motivate & Help farmers to start livestock units/farms to produce milk, meat, egg, wool, fodder etc.

The department provides these services through its vast network of Veterinary Hospitals, Dispensaries, AI Centers, Production Support Farms and laboratories.
